Aurat March petition

Letter February 27, 2020
The Lahore High Court on Monday accepted a petition to stop the march from happening.

KARACHI: A man filed a petition against holding the Aurat March 2020 and was advertising it on social media. Women activists organise the Aurat March every year on the 8th of March to mark International Women Day in order to celebrate sisterhood, demonstrate choice, opportunity, show solidarity and to fight an oppressive patriarchal system that is harmful to all of us. Women have faced oppression for centuries. This march is an opportunity for them to finally let out all the pent up frustration. Unfortunately, the society that we live in won’t even let them do that. The Lahore High Court on Monday accepted a petition to stop the march from happening. The LHC Chief Justice issued notices to the federal and provincial governments on an application seeking a permanent ban on Aurat March for being anti-state and un-Islamic. According to the petitioner, the March leads to misdirection and is a failed attempt to raise awareness about the grave issues commonly faced by women in Pakistan. The lawyer stated that hundreds of women would once again march with placards displaying various messages that allegedly manifest anarchy and vulgarity.
