Addiction to smoking

Letter February 21, 2020
The relevant authorities should solve the issue of smoking by banning its sale around universities and public places

KARACHI: Everyone knows that smoking or vaping is extremely injurious to health, yet the number of youth smokers is increasing by the day. More and more students are becoming addicted and this is troubling.

It has become a common practice among young people living in hostels of universities that they openly indulge in smoking on educational premises. A majority of students just smoke for the sake of fitting in or acting cool while being completely oblivious of the dangers associated with it. But the truth is that smoking is one of the major causes of throat, mouth or lung cancer and other serious diseases. There is no point in risking your life and the lives of others. The relevant authorities should solve the issue of smoking by banning its sale around universities and public places. The HEC should ban smoking within the premises of all educational institutions. Distribution of tobacco should be regulated and identification should be asked when selling tobacco so as to prevent youngsters from buying it in the first place.
