Honour killing

Letter February 20, 2020
Violence against women and girls in Pakistan are quite rampant.

TURBAT: Violence against women and girls in Pakistan are quite rampant. Heinous crimes are committed on a daily basis such as rape, forced marriage, domestic violence, acid attacks and honour killings. This is a serious issue in Pakistan where women are facing multiple life challenges and in many cases their lives are destroyed because of such acts.

According to statistics, it is estimated that around 1,000 honour killing incidents occur every year in Pakistan. Such incidents are really bad for the image of the country, especially when it comes to the rights of women. Similarly, the problem of early marriage also persists mostly in the tribal areas of Pakistan where girls are married off at an early age. A report stated that 21% of girls in Pakistan are being married off before the age of 18 while 3% are forced into marriage before the age of 15. Many such girls commit suicide.

According to a Movement for Solidarity and Peace report, in Pakistan at least 1,000 girls belonging to Christian and Hindu communities are forced to marry Muslim men each year. But the government has done little to stop such crimes.

So, the PTI government is requested to take measures to stop honour killings and other crimes against women.
