Collective responsibility

Letter February 19, 2020
They must sit together and work to save Pakistan from slipping further into the abyss.

ISLAMABAD: While we, as a nation, long for clean air, water and other basic necessities of life, we never move a step forward to create conditions conducive to protect the environment. Protecting the environment and ensuring access to clean water, decent education and health facilities to the masses is a feat only possible through the collective efforts of all, from ordinary citizens to top politicians. Sadly, we as a nation only expect the system to work and others to fulfil their responsibilities, but don’t change ourselves. We litter and throw garbage from houses anywhere and everywhere. Factory owners ruthlessly destroy the environment just to save money on taking environmentally-friendly measures. Farmers burn residue to save time and effort, and politicians only keep uttering words with no action to follow. The result is that we suffer from water shortages, smog and disease outbreaks. It is a pity that despite being an agricultural country, we import food items. We can see real change only if every person does their bit to work for a better Pakistan. The people of Pakistan must start abiding by the law and put in every effort to ensure positive changes. Similarly, the politicians must get out of their self-serving habits and shun their differences. They must sit together and work to save Pakistan from slipping further into the abyss.
