India’s diplomatic stunts

Letter February 17, 2020
It’s time for Pakistan to play its role through proactive diplomacy

KHAIRPUR: This Wednesday India took a number of EU and GCC envoys to tour IOK. It is not shocking to see this display of an orchestrated diplomacy by India, as, in January, the Indians had organised a similar kind of a guided tour of the EU envoys amidst revocation of Article 370.

Such diplomatic stunts seem funny and also unfortunate at the same time. India-Occupied Kashmir has been under lockdown and a communication blackout for more than six months; its three former chief ministers are under house arrest and it has no elected representatives since its legislate assembly has been dissolved and the territory has been forcefully annexed. What more proof does anyone want?

This visit could be aimed for the upcoming sessions of the OIC and the EU due to take place in near future. Earlier, both the OIC and the EU have condemned India’s actions with respect to Kashmir. The EU held a session to adopt a resolution to condemn India’s controversial citizenship law but the resolution was short of majority. This resolution would be tabled in the next EU parliamentary session scheduled to take place on 31st March. If this resolution is adopted it will certainly dent India’s economic and diplomatic clout. Similarly, the OIC session is also expected to denounce India’s move in Kashmir.

It’s time for Pakistan to play its role through proactive diplomacy. The Foreign Office should call on diplomats of the EU and the OIC and inform them about the tragic situation in Kashmir.
