Protecting society

Do they have vested interest therein to let this crime be handled by lesser penalties

KARACHI: That a heinous crime can only be stopped by proportionate deterrence doesn’t need much wisdom to understand nor does it take much to understand that this deterrence is directed only to the criminals who are a curse to society. Why then is energy being spent in parliament and other decision-making forums against the death penalty for child abusers. Do they have vested interest therein to let this crime be handled by lesser penalties — though the lack of sympathy and empathy on their part for the victims and their families and, their moral as well as intellectual deficiency has already been proved. They speak of modernism and resonate with the efforts of Richard Nixon who fought for establishing the death penalty in US justice system as he thought it was the only check for kidnapping, let alone murder. Child abuse is a far graver offence than murder. It is therefore most unfortunate that those making noise against the death penalty have to be referred back to legal minds who argue for establishing firm deterrence by making capital punishment seen and known by the public. Do we now claim to understand human nature and what drives it better than human being’s very creator? This unnecessary debate therefore needs to be immediately stopped and a sense of responsibility should be asserted by the PM Office and Parliament in protecting the society.
