Local government commission to review top LG official’s performance

ISLAMABAD: A local government commission formed the interior ministry, has decided to review the performance of the Islamabad Metropolitan Corporation IMC) Mayor Sheikh Anser Aziz today. Sources have claimed that the commission could decide with regards to the mayor, including ordering his suspension.

The high-powered commission, which is headed by the Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Capital Development Authority (CDA) Affairs Ali Nawaz Awan, is scheduled to meet on Thursday (today) to decide Mayor Anser Aziz’s fate, sources told The Express Tribune.

The commission has been granted powers such that, on its recommendations, the federal government can suspend the mayor, the deputy mayor, chairmen and vice-chairman for six months, sources close to the development said.

Wishing not to be named since they were not allowed to speak to the media, they said that commission is expected to convene at the Convention Centre with Awan in the chair. Other members of the commission include Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf’s (PTI) Senator Seemi Ezdi, Islamabad MNA Raja Khurram Nawaz, technocrats Ali Bukhari and Tayabba Ibrahim, Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) Chief Commissioner and CDA Chairman Amer Ali Ahmed and the director of local government was expected to attend the meeting.  Other two members of the commission include Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) MNA and former prime minister Raja Pervez Ashraf and Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) Senator Mushahid Hussain Syed, however, they have yet to attend a single meeting of the commission.

The agenda of the meeting has been set to review the progress of the local government in the federal capital since its formation in 2015. The commission is expected to make the performance review the foundation for suspending the mayor, sources said.
