Women’s emancipation

Letter February 04, 2020
Patriarchal culture and male dominancy has ruined our dreams and shattered our confidence

KARACHI: Why is it so that I am 26 and I still can’t learn how to drive? Why if I have a high grade fever I am still expected to cook and do household chores while my brother can sit comfortably and watch television.

We are now in the 21st century where women aren’t now any less than any other beings regardless of gender. Women are firefighters, fighter pilots, doctors, astronauts, writers and much more rather than objects which are continuously being sexualised and suppressed around the world. But if we talk about the sub-continent and South Asia typically, women are still in the same position of degradation and humiliation; and are still fighting for their basic rights.

People can deny but the fact of the matter is that younger women are suffering in Pakistan.

This patriarchal culture and male dominancy has ruined our dreams and shattered our confidence to the point that is unimaginable. Many raw talents and eligible intellectuals are sitting in utmost despair, eagerly waiting to hone their talents.

Recently, I myself witnessed this fact: a woman who completed her doctorate is pushed backwards while a married woman is being applauded for acting like a slave. Are women only objects that have conformed tightly to such abstinent patriarchy? Can’t they have our careers, their own prospects and stay independent. The patriarchal thought needs to be changed.

In order to save younger women from depression and anxiety we have to pay heed to this toxic culture and completely get rid of inhumane behaviour and certain societal norms which have enslaved women.
