Karachi mayor advises citizens not to resist robbers

Waseem Akhtar says police have failed to fulfil their responsibility

KARACHI: Claiming that the government was paying no heed to rising crime in the city, Karachi mayor Wasim Akhtar appealed to citizens not to offer resistance if they were looted, in order to save their own lives.

Speaking to the media at the prize distribution ceremony of the Quaid-e-Azam Cricket Tournament at the Rashid Latif Academy, the mayor said that crime in Karachi was increasing with every passing day and, combined with the city's other growing issues, this had created a dangerous situation in the city.

Akhtar said that the police had failed to fulfil their responsibility, adding that the new Sindh police chief should be appointed on the basis of merit.

He further pointed out that controlling the spread of coronavirus was the responsibility of the federal government, but added that the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation would play its role in this regard.

Referring to the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan's inclusion in the federal government, the mayor warned that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf should not take actions that would affect the agreement between the parties. "The resolution of issues is more important for us than federal ministries," he insisted.
