LAHORE: As the government required Nawaz to submit his fresh medical reports, the former premier’s personal physician has only through a letter apprised the Punjab authorities about the PML-N supremo’s latest health condition and termed the previously documented medical record sufficient to determine his fitness.

The Punjab government had given Nawaz three days – January 28 to January 31 to submit his fresh health record after the medical board constituted to deliberate on grounds for his extension of bail found the reports submitted by his family insufficient.

The provincial government had also warned that if the medical reports were not submitted, the competent authority would decide the matter of bail as per the available facts brought on record.

Punjab seeks ‘fresh’ reports from Nawaz

Dr Adnan in his letter stated that the special medical board on December 27 had concluded that the reports were not final to form a conclusive opinion, and, thereby, required Nawaz to furnish the latest report, although the medical reports were recent at the time of submission.

The physician said that new medical reports were once again delivered to the Punjab government on January 14, 2020.

“Despite the fact that the already submitted medical reports are sufficient to determine the current medical condition of MNS, I am hereby once again unambiguously elaborating in and through this letter, his latest medical status, so as to remove any misconception about or misunderstanding of his medical condition,” said Dr Adnan in the letter.

On the other hand, Punjab home department has denied any correspondence from Nawaz in response to the three-day deadline given for the submission of detailed medical reports, which exhausted on Friday.

A source in PML-N said that no new medical reports had been submitted to the Punjab government as the previously submitted reports were sufficient.

It claimed the government would not extend the PML-N chief bail no matter what they were provided with.

The source maintained that the PML-N would approach the court for extension of Nawaz’s bail.

Nawaz, who is serving a seven-year jail term due to his conviction in a corruption case, was diagnosed with an immune system disorder – acute immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) – in October 2019.

He remained hospitalised in Pakistan, for weeks on end and reportedly remained in ‘very’ critical condition. He was later granted eight-week interim bail on October 26, 2019.

The PTI-led federal government allowed him to fly abroad for treatment after a board of doctors constituted by the government concluded that his treatment was not possible in Pakistan.

The former prime minister is currently seeking an extension in his stay abroad from the Punjab government on health grounds due to severe illness – which some suspect is a ruse to escape jail.
