Zainab alert bill

Letter January 22, 2020
Pakistan has finally chosen to confront the problem of child abuse

BALOCHISTAN: The National Assembly recently passed the Zainab Alert, Recovery and Response Bill, that is designed to prevent more underage children from dying at the hands of predatory child molesters who continue to lurk in our society. Missing and abducted children mostly become victims of violence, abuse, exploitation, trafficking, rape or death. The sexual abuse and exploitation of children is not something new in our society, or indeed in any society. This has come to the forefront of public discourse through the greater frequency in reporting in the recent year.

There are thousands of children like Zainab who are abducted, abused, sold, sexually exploited and subjected to the most cruel and inhumane torture every single day of this year. The Zainab Alert Bill is a step in the right direction and one hopes that it will be able to put a pause to at least some of these dark and dangerous crimes. Pakistanis can start protecting their children against the evils that lurk all around them. It appears that Pakistan has finally chosen to confront the problem of child abuse that had been festering for decades. Parents and children must be very alert to all this.
