Democracy and its essentials

The primary purpose of democracy can be served by uplifting the masses in all sectors

JAMSHORO: Democracy is a form of government in which people have power to choose their representatives by exercising the right to vote in elections. It is a type of rule that provides complete liberty to the general people at the grassroots level. Every ethnic, religious, cast, creed, and political group enjoys freedom. Power and authority belong to the people, because the masses bring leaders to rule the state through their own power.

Democracy promotes human rights and equality for all without any discrimination. It renders equal opportunities to everyone by giving freedom of expression, right to life, right to vote, right to health and all other basic pivotal human rights, declared in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the UN in 1948.

The rule of law disseminates under the democratic regime which is the fundamental prerequisite for the stability of any state. A country can’t prosper without the rule of law and a stable security situation. A satisfactory law and order situation will encourage foreign investments and promote domestic businesses. However, democracy ensures equality before law for everyone without any discrimination between the rich and poor, mighty and weak.

Moreover, it inculcates justice and fair-play in dispensing verdicts relating to all matters. No doubt, elite groups influence judicial proceedings frequently but democracy nurtures equality in providing justice to the drown-trodden. In the present nation-state system, democracy is a universally accepted form of government and the judiciary is an essential organ of that system.

The primary purpose of democracy can be served by uplifting the masses in all sectors. For instance, a democratic state has to strive for the wellbeing of all the people economically, socially and politically. This is how democracy can be strengthened.
