Rights of trans community

Transgender people are highly disadvantaged in the economic sphere

TURBAT: Pakistan has the sixth highest population of transgender people in the world. They are deprived of various social, economic, political and educational rights in our country. It is because of their biological transition to another gender that they are neglected and removed from many societal fields.

Whenever they apply for any jobs in companies, factories even in small shops, they are out-rightly rejected. The sole reason for their rejection is their gender. Furthermore, the status which we have given to them is lower than other humans in society. But many of us don’t think of their welfare. We mostly remember them when there is a marriage or other festive occasions.

Transgender people are highly disadvantaged in the economic sphere. They cannot afford even two square meals a day lack. Due to their present conditions or gender, markets, malls, shops, companies and multinationals as well as other institutions don’t provide them business opportunities like other common businessmen in our country.

However, we also cannot deny the fact that politically they have sometimes been under discussion by our law-makers to pass bills and make laws for their safety, but their promises are just verbal. We often see transgender people being disrespected, abused and beaten in bazaars. Why are they not treated like others in our society?
