The state of society

Letter January 10, 2020
Merit is being totally disregarded

KARACHI: At present the world is facing several moral crises. Words are now bereft of their meaning; they have been emptied of their established meanings. We see this happening around us day in and day out. When we see both young and mature people so absorbed in mobile phones and the internet, we wonder where do they get time to study. I do not think they concentrate on their studies. Simply passing examinations does not mean much, though this is all that matters in our unfortunate society. Merit is being totally disregarded.

People going ahead without merit gives people what they want. But when such people face international competition the reality is exposed. Our neighbouring countries are bagging Nobel after Nobel. They have their highly qualified teachers teaching in the world’s top universities. Their lectures are listened to seriously and their books are widely read and acclaimed. Where do we stand?
