Unprecedented unity in NA

Letter January 09, 2020
Our lawmakers only tend to show unity when it is of their own benefit

ISLAMABAD: One would love to congratulate the lawmakers on showing unprecedented unity in passing the amendments to the Army Act. Their show of unity to clear an important bill is commendable. However, the same lawmakers are elected by people to make laws and develop policies that strengthen the economy and bring real benefit to the masses. They are responsible for safeguard and wellbeing of the citizens of Pakistan. In doing so, they must ensure provision of basic human rights and facilities such as access to healthcare, education and necessities such as food, water and utilities. They also must ensure equal rights to everyone, including freedom of speech and movement, and create an environment where people can live without fear and worry. Unfortunately, our lawmakers only tend to show unity when it is of their own benefit, be it salaries and benefits of the members of the National Assembly or pleasing the powers that control everything. I am sure that if our politicians show even a fraction of unity, our country will progress at an unprecedented pace. I wish and pray that we see that happening sooner than later.
