Right to self-determination: India's unrestrained oppression in IOK is unprecedented, says FM Qureshi

Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi called upon the international community to push Narendra Modi-led government to lift the five-month-long curfew in Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

In his message on the Right to Self-determination Day, the foreign minister rejected India's illegal and unilateral actions post August 5 2019 when the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) abolished Article 370 of the Indian constitution that granted autonomy to the occupied region.

"India’s unrestrained oppression has reached unprecedented levels with the inhuman lockdown in Indian Occupied Kashmir for over 150 days," he said.

Qureshi said every additional second on the curfew clock is a burden on the world's collective conscience and urged the international community to raise their voice for the Kashmiris.



“The international community must act in support of the fundamental freedoms and basic human rights of Kashmiris and urge India to allow the UN Fact Finding Mission to IOJ&K to ascertain the reports of grave human rights violation there.”

“India must allow United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) unhindered access to carry out its duties in IOK, if India has nothing to hide, it must allow international media and civil society to visit and report on the human rights situation in IOK,” he added.

The foreign minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s political, diplomatic and moral support to the people of Kashmir in their struggle against grave human rights violation and their right to self-determination according to United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions.
