RAWALPINDI: A project to shift wholesale markets in Rawalpindi to the outskirts of the city has been left pending once again.

The government had planned to shift the markets to the Rawat area of the city to ease traffic congestion in the city centre.

However, The Express Tribune has learnt that due to the opposition from some elected representatives of Rawalpindi, all expectations of completing the project in 2020 have turned sour.

It is notable that for the past five years, the district administration had not taken any measure to either develop infrastructure for shifting these markets to the outskirts of the city.

Neither the past or incumbent governments could complete the project.

The presence of these markets in the city contributes to traffic congestion due to the constant movement of loader vehicles.
