Karachi dominates Sindh Games day one

KARACHI: Karachi region dominated the opening day of the Sindh Games with six gold medals following a colourful opening ceremony yesterday.

The Karachi duo of Riaz Khan and Samreen Niaz emerged as the fastest man and woman of Sindh when both bagged gold medals in the 100-metre race.

In the men’s 100-metre event, Abdullah Chandio took the silver medal while Fida Hussain from Sukkur finished second.

Similarly, in the women’s 100-metre race, Razia Khan finished second while Kanwal Naz from Hyderabad earned bronze.

Karachi’s Almas Ibrahim, Nazima Asghar and Shakeel Ahmed also performed well in the 1500-metre, 800-metre, and the women’s Javelin throw competition.

Sukkur region ended with second position with two medals in the 5000-metre race: Khalid Mehmood in Javelin throw and long jump competitions.

Home Minister Zulfikar Mirza inaugurated the event and said, “Sindh Games will help project a soft image of the province and I hope that the players will show their potential with the spirit of unity and peace.”

Sindh Sports Minister Dr Mohammad Ali Shah thanked the minister and welcomed the athletes while hoping that the event would convey the message of tolerance and unity in the sports community of the province.
