KARACHI:
The University of Karachi (KU) conferred degrees upon 7,184 graduates on Saturday during the 30th convocation of the varsity. The graduates included PhD, MPhil, Masters and Bachelors students of various disciplines from both the morning and evening shifts.
High achievers were awarded with gold medals and the recipients included Faiza Sabir of the faculty of arts and social sciences, Alieya Ali of the faculty of education, Sumaira Ashraf of the faculty of Islamic studies, Tasmeena Perveen and Syeda Izza Maryam Rizvi of the faculty of law, Syeda Sualeha Waseem of the faculty of pharmacy, Farah Siddiqui and Muqaddas Jelani of the faculty of management and administrative sciences.
Speaking on the occasion, Sindh Governor Imran Ismail said that KU's ranking in Asia has improved. It is ranked as the 239th best higher education institute in the region, he said, adding that the varsity had notable alumni to boast of such as Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan, Dr Attaur Rehman, Dr Israr Ahmed, Raees Amhrohi, Dr Salimuzzaman Siddiqui, and others. He urged the graduating class to work in the country and claimed that there was no shortage of employment opportunities here. One must know how to utilise them, he said. According to the governor, 70 per cent of the world's economies would be run by 20 countries by 2023, and Pakistan would be among that privileged group.
Earlier, KU Vice Chancellor Dr Khalid Maqbool Mahmood Iraqi said that the varsity's ranking had improved globally due to the hard work and expertise of its faculty. Besides, he added, international collaborations are crucial for any varsity to build global competence. He said that the varsity recently acquired a commitment of 20 scholarships from various universities in China.
The vice chancellor announced that KU has also decided to offer scholarships for students who wish to study at the varsity but cannot due to financial constraints.
