ISLAMABAD: The first cancer hospital in Balochistan, Shaikh Zayed Hospital Quetta, is going to be operational soon as its construction work is in its final stages.

An official told APP that the provincial government had allocated Rs1 billion in current Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) for the establishment of a cancer hospital in Quetta.

The federal government had also made a commitment to provide its support in building the first cancer hospital in the province.

He said Balochistan Chief Minister Jam Kamal Khan would inaugurate the hospital. It would be the first of its kind, primarily focusing on diagnosis of the fatal disease, as many patients affected by cancer in the province were referred to hospitals in other provinces.

Criticising the previous governments for neglecting the health sector, he said dozens had lost their lives due to the lack of proper treatment in their areas.

He said the Balochistan government was striving hard to extend healthcare facilities to people and had released Rs17.749 million to purchase medicine and equipment for the hospitals in Quetta city.
