Sara Khokhar a 22-year-old Pakistani, currently doing her MBBS in Abu Dhabi, who runs a blog by the name Recherché (re-shur-shay) by Sara Khokhar decodes her style for us. From her favourite silhouettes, to how her body type has changed over the years, Sara shares it all.

Understanding your body is the key to looking good and a trait found amongst all impeccably dressed fashionistas. While people shy away from talking about their bodies, these brave souls explain how they work their anatomies to their advantage

How would you describe your body type?

I am a lean, slightly petite female, and for me extra small is all the rage. You could say I have a tiny frame!

Has your body type changed over the last five years?

Not my body type per say, but more so the silhouette. It has become easier for me to gain weight in parts I’m not a fan of. My face though, which has taken a more natural course of changes as opposed to my body, which on average, has been the same, more or less.

How has your styled changed over the years?

More independent, more experimental. I feel I have more control over what I wear, how I wear it - And I really only like doing it my way. I’ve never been one to follow trends. I don’t deny taking inspiration, but that does not mean that inspiration has to sprout from something that is trending. I would still carry a bag that was the ‘it thing’ in the 2000s, if it complements my current style. I don’t like to restrict myself with colours, but I’m an avid fan of neutrals and pastels, beige being the highlight on the spectrum.

In your opinion, what is your most troublesome area?

In terms of my body, that would be my torso, my belly specifically. Like most girls out there, this is the hardest part for me to keep in shape but I put up a fight! Not with any bogus diet rituals but plainly maintaining a calorie deficit. And yoga.

How do you dress your body according to your body type?

I believe one should dress their body based on their level of comfort. Personally, I am grateful for being this small sized human, as it allows me to seamlessly fit into everything, like bodycons. The joy of not having to worry about a sudden rip or a button cruising away helps me stay in my skin. I love wearing jeans only when the weather speaks for it, I love sweatpants, oversized sweaters and outfits with a unique element. I feel like I dress my body in accordance to my mood, feelings and surroundings, more than how my body type actually is. If my body type has ever influenced how I dress, then perhaps it is when I’ve opted for not wearing fitted clothes when I’m feeling chubby! Ain’t nobody like them rips!

In your opinion what is the biggest mistake a person can make while dressing?

There are a few.  Firstly, a certain body type shouldn’t define or restrict you from how you choose to dress yourself. Having said that - don’t be bogged down by obesity or anorexia - get help! Don’t force yourself to look like that cover model, appreciate your contours and work on them carefully. Another sore sight, that strikes out would be colour matching, or mismatching in this case. Your outfit could be abstract, a piece of art, but there needs to be some amount of semblance to arrangement or form. Also, not matching your make-up with your outfit can turn out to be harrowing. For example, I’m not saying aqua blue lips for an aqua blue outfit, but if your outfit speaks elegance, your make-up should be on the same page. There’s a fine line between being the statement and being a mess. Just know your style. Know your colours. Don’t compromise on comfort. And don’t hesitate. Style is so experimental, so subjective, and not everyone is born with it. So it becomes essential, overtime, to realise what suits your body and face the most.

Which silhouettes suit your body the most?

I think bodycons would be my favourite. I’ve also been told they complement my body the most. But like I said, I don’t have a style fixation. So after bodycons, a pair of high waisted denims with crop tops or baggy sweats would be my go-to. And when I’m in an ultimate sloth mode, give me my pajamas or anything close to that. I recently purchased a bunch of mom-jeans, straight cut pants (not my usual skinny jeans) and I’ve started to like the way they suit my long legs, and the comfort they provide.

What is the one piece of clothing that you shy away from wearing and why?

I don’t think there’s any piece of clothing I’d turn away from. Maybe showing too much skin on the front; not because I think it sends the ‘wrong message’ but I am not the most comfortable wearing something that would reveal, in particular, my cleavage. Other than that, from dresses to shorts, ripped jeans to halters, tube tops and gowns and jumpsuits, name the apparel and I’d have done it justice. I’m looking forward to any item of clothing that turns up around the block to feed my experimental spirit.
