467 kilns sealed for defying smog ban in Faisalabad

Only 30 of the establishments complied, authorities sealed the remaining brick kilns

FAISALABAD:
The environment protection department initiated a crackdown against manufacturing establishments responsible for smog and shutdown 467 brick kilns on Wednesday.

Assistant Director Farhat Abbas said 467 kilns in Faisalabad which were repeatedly issued notices demanding them to shift their operations to zigzag technology but only 30 of the establishments complied.

Hence, the authorities were compelled to seal the noncomplying brick kilns.

He informed that there are 709 small and large factories in the city and those causing pollution are being sealed.

“In December this year, action has been taken against 43 factories causing pollution while First Information Reports have also been registered against several factories,” he added.

“Production facilities operating on old technology were given instructions to halt their operations until December 31, but most of the kiln owners did not follow the order after which the department took action,” he stated.

In addition, action has also been taken against 13 small and large industries found guilty of deteriorating the environment.
