Digital Pakistan: another hollow promise?

Letter December 11, 2019
The reality is we are still not investing out time and money in any real innovation and research

ISLAMABAD: A few days ago, Prime Minister Imran Khan inaugurated the plan for a “Digital Pakistan.” Being a young citizen of the country, it greatly pleased me to see something technologically advanced taking place in the country. Personally, my expectations were more based upon the notion that this step was being taken to open new grounds for IT research and establishing a foreground on which our future generations will be able to build upon. Research is integral for the growth of any country and its economy. It enforces innovation and helps brings out the best minds of the country, enabling them to integrate their thoughts and ideas for a better future.

However, I was greatly disappointed to see that all this preparation for a “Digital Pakistan” was reduced to nothing but inviting a few Youtubers to the Prime Minister’s office. Although part of the digital and technological community of Pakistan, these Youtubers are but artists making videos of different sorts such as pranks and skits. The reality is that we are still not investing out time and money in any real innovation and research, which can possibly help us to further ourselves as a country in the 21st century and stand among the international community.
