They outclassed their opponents in the events of handball, squash and wrestling at the ongoing 13th South Asian Games (SAG) in Nepal.
Athletes from seven countries -- Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Maldives and Nepal -- participating in the regional sports competition.
In the handball event, Pakistan exhibited their prowess when they edged passed traditional rivals India in the final to claim gold medal. According to the Pakistan Sports Board, Pakistan defeated India 30-29 in an exciting contest.
Country’s top wrestler Muhammad Inam Butt, who earned laurels for the country during the last Commonwealth Games, continued his winning streak and bagged a gold medal after outplaying Nepalese opponent Summit Kumar in the final.
“In the first round I was down with 4-6 points. However, in round two, I used the double leg technique to finish the game,” said Inam who won a gold medal in the category of 92kg.
Talking about other wrestlers, he said both Muhammad Bilal and Umair Butt won silver medals in their respective categories.
In his tweet, Butt said: “I won a gold medal in @SAG_2019 and successfully defend my tittle. Thanks everyone for your support and prayers. I will try to continue play like this and win medals for my country.”
Moreover, top seed Tayyab Aslam swatted aside India’s Harindar Pal Singh 3-1 to win gold medal in individual squash event.
Tayyab lost first set 8-11, but bounced back strongly to win next three sets 11-3, 11-8 and 11-8. Event’s second seed Farhoon Mehboob earned bronze as he had conceded defeat to Harindar Pal 3-2 in a nail-biting semifinal thriller on Saturday 9-11, 11-8, 6-11, 11-8, 11-9.
Pakistani women players Madina Zafar and Faiza Zafar also claimed bronze medal in individual round of squash event. In total, in individual round of men and women events Pakistan earned one gold and three bronze medals. APP
