KARACHI:

Pakistan have pinned all hopes on Saadi Abbas to win a medal at the 10th Asian Karate-Do Federation (AKF) Senior Championship, which is due to begin in China today.

Abbas, who won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games 2010, will compete in the 67-kilogramme (kg) event.

Pakistan’s Baz Muhammad will compete in the 60-kg category, Muhammad Kashif in the 55-kg event, Imtiaz Ali in the 75-kg category while Muhammad Ramzan will take part in the 85-kg category.

“We have very talented players this time,” the Pakistan Kabaddi Federation Secretary Shamim Hashmi told The Express Tribune. “The toughest competitors in the tournament will come from the host country, but Abbas defeated Chinese players at the Commonwealth Games last year, and we are optimistic he can repeat his performance.”

The main event for the seniors’ competition will take place on July 23, after a week of preliminaries and qualifying rounds between players from 21 other countries.
