Zia was serving as the inspector general of Pakistan Railways Police before being appointed as head of the FIA on November 30 following a bureaucracy reshuffle in Punjab and the centre.
A Grade 21 officer of the Police Service of Pakistan (PSP), Zia came to the limelight in 2017 when he was appointed as head of the joint investigation team formed to probe the assets of former premier Nawaz Sharif and his family in the Panama Papers case.
Subsequently, Supreme Court, on the basis of the findings of this team, had disqualified then prime minister Nawaz Sharif for life under Article 62 and 63 of the Constitution.
PM Imran, the according to the statement, said that fighting organised crime including “corruption, cybercrime, economic crime, immigration-related crimes, money laundering and across the board accountability is the main plank of PTI government's agenda.”
The FIA chief assured the premier that “he will do his best to serve the country with commitment”.
Meanwhile, PM's aide on accountability Shehzad Akbar, who was also present in the meeting, has been given an additional charge of special assistant on interior.
According to a notification issued by the Cabinet Division, Akbar will have the status of a state minister.
