RAWALPINDI: The Rawalpindi literacy department has approved a move to upgrade all 375 Literacy Centres across the district into ‘Model Education Centres’.

Some 11 centres operating in Adyala jail have also been included in the project. Women and juvenile inmates will be taught to operate computers at these centres.

The decision was taken during a meeting of the department chaired by District Literacy Officers including Ghulam Ahmed Akash, Ijaz Hussain Shah and Madam Hala Anwar on Monday.

Apart from curricular activities, it was decided that students will be engaged in extra-curricular activities such as sports, scouts, girl guides and others.

A plantation drive would also be carried out in all these centres to create a healthier atmosphere.

The number of students enrolled in the centres will increase over time and education committees comprising clerics of mosques at the union council (UC) and village council (VC) levels will be formed which to persuade families of out-of-school children to enrol their kids.
