RAWALPINDI: Recent rains have replenished water reserves in three dams, Rawal, Khanpur and Simly, supplying water to the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad.

The spillways of Rawal Dam have been opened after the rains this week. The water capacity of Rawal Dam is 47,508 acre feet, while that of Khanpur Dam is 110,000 acre feet and Simly Dam can store 28,750 acre feet of water.

Currently, the water level in all these dams has reached the upper-level mark. Besides, water flowing from catchment areas of Murree is flowing into these reservoirs following snowfall and rains.

Rawalpindi Water and Sewerage Agency Managing Director Mohammad Tanveer said Rawalpindi was not facing any shortage of water after a long time.

Current reserves in the three dams and the available tube wells can cater to the water needs of Rawalpindi for a whole year, he said.

Meanwhile, the disruption of water supply from Khanpur Dam to Rawalpindi city and the cantonment areas has been fully resolved, Tanveer said.

A pipeline had broken down, due to which supply had been diverted to K-P and Rawalpindi was getting only three million gallons per day instead of six, he said.
