Edhi Foundation awarded Isa Award for service to humanity

Edhi will receive $1 million, along with a gold medal and a certificate of appreciation

The Edhi Foundation on Wednesday was awarded the Isa Award for its service to humanity and will receive $1 million, along with a gold medal and a certificate of appreciation.

After shortlisting several qualifiers from different countries, the International Jury recommended the EDHI Foundation. The General Secretariat of the Award – along with the jury – investigated the worksites of the foundation, reviewed methods of providing services and verified their records of achievements.

The Board of Trustees of the Isa Award is chaired by Deputy Prime Minister His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Mubarak Al Khalifa.

The grand royal ceremony honoured by the presence of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, King of the Kingdom of Bahrain will be held on Tuesday.

Nominated several times for the Nobel Peace Prize Abdul Sattar Edhi (late) was referred to as “the father of the poor” and “the angel of mercy”.

Edhi dedicated his life to helping the poor. He established a charity foundation that sponsored the building of maternity hospitals, morgues, orphanages, shelters and nursing homes.

He passed away on July 8, 2016 and left his children to manage 300 emergency centres spread across Pakistan, 1,500 ambulances, 28 rescue boats and three small ambulance airplanes.

Edhi Foundation

The Edhi Foundation homes orphanages, differently-abled, rejected and displaced children. They have shelters for abused women, maternity centres, family planning centres, training institutions for nurses, blood banks, a tuberculosis clinic and a tumor hospital.

Edhi provides free-of-cost medical services, several ophthalmology hospitals, diabetes centers, surgical units, a small cancer hospital and several mobile clinics, as well as two blood banks in Karachi.

It provides food for prisoners, shelter services to needy children and psychiatric patients.

Before his death in 2016, Edhi founded the 50-kilometre Edhi project. It focuses on helping accident victims on the internal and external roads of Pakistan.
