Incarcerated minds

Letter November 12, 2019
The time has come for us to ignore other people’s opinions and decide for ourselves

PESHAWAR: Our forefathers had struggled long and hard for the separate homeland where people could live freely. Fortunately, they succeeded and eventually Pakistan came into being on Aug 14, 1947. We remember this day as our Independence Day. We got our land, our independence and our autonomy. Even though we are independent in the eyes of the world, we are deprived of freedom because of the confinement of our minds. We have put restrictions on ourselves and that is the biggest obstacle in our path towards success.

Whenever we think about matters related to life, we are confronted with other people’s opinions. In the present world’s rapid advancement, entrepreneurs are eagerly looking at problems in order to solve them so that people could benefit from new innovative ideas. Similarly, Pakistani entrepreneurs are trying their best to provide comfort to the people. Above all, the common belief is that everyone must work independently for their individual success. There is no dearth of ideas. Lack of execution is the preponderant problem in our society. There are many factors behind this conundrum such as lack of financial resources, uncertainty and societal pessimism. We are often told that there are high chances of failure and that demotivates us from pursuing what we are passionate about. In addition, the surprising thing is that some businesses are considered superior while others are considered inferior.

We are doing everything for others and we don’t stop and think. Why should we feel shame if we can’t wear fine clothes? Why should we let others decide what is acceptable and appropriate for us? Why should we be afraid to do business that is considered inferior? The time has come for us to ignore other people’s opinions and decide for ourselves what is best for us. This will help us not only to achieve success but also satisfaction.
