A woman from the United States caused a commotion at the Islamabad Airport by lying on the floor of the waiting area after authorities tried to deport her.

The 70-year-old woman had arrived in the country on a Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight from Manchester.

The woman, in a wheelchair, had allegedly been blacklisted by authorities.

When the airport staff informed her of the situation, the woman began yelling before stepping out of the wheelchair and lying prostate on the floor of what appeared to be a waiting area at the airport.

Paying no heed to the officials' exhortations, she began wailing and shouting, including what sounds like "help" (maddad) in Urdu.

The American embassy was then contacted and called at the airport to resolve the issue.

According to her passport, the woman was born in Washington.

Earlier this year, immigration authorities at the airport had deported a woman of the same nationality when she was found to be without a valid visa.

Officials said that the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) had taken the deported American national Sonia Seeta Perez into custody after she identified that she was travelling without a visa.

She had boarded a flight to Pakistan from Doha on a private international airline.
