Vulnerabilities of depression

Letter November 10, 2019
Making someone smile can relieve them of their tensions, even though it may be temporarily

KARACHI: When I walked through the streets of Lahore, observed towns in Karachi, visited some belts of Sindh, explored sights of Mianwali and Bhakhar, met the people of Dera Ghazi Khan and Kasur, shared ideas with youth in Multan and Sahiwal and promoted human rights and social welfare in Hyderabad, the one recurrent thing that I saw was depressed faces and disappointed minds. These faces had been a part of my daily life for the past five years. The odyssey contains experiences that have become reports for much research and response.

I am of the conviction that the entire country is beleaguered by depression and frustration. No one looks or sounds happy. No doubt, life is not a bed of roses, but that does not mean we lose hope. Making someone smile can relieve them of their tensions, even though it may be temporarily. During such times of mental stress, we should collaborate with each other and develop good communicative and candid relationships so that we remind ourselves to laugh and stay happy again.
