Court issues notice to jail superintendent over accused’s absence

Aftab Memon, along with others, is nominated in a reference pertaining to illegal allotment of state land

KARACHI: An accountability court issued a notice to the Adiala Jail superintendent on Saturday, over failure to produce Land Utilisation Secretary Aftab Memon before the court.

Memon, along with others, is nominated in a reference pertaining to illegal allotment of state land. The notice was issued during the hearing of the reference.

The land utilisation secretary, who is imprisoned at Adiala Jail, was not presented before the court at the hearing, following which, the court issued a notice to the jail superintendent and directed him to produce the accused before the court on November 12.

According to NAB, Mukhtiarkar Muhammad Salik, Tapedar Abdul Aziz and Sub-Registrar Shahid Raza have also been nominated in the reference, and Memon is currently arrested for involvement in another case pertaining to fake bank accounts.

Memon and others are accused of illegally allotting 1,729 acres of government land in Malir District, which caused a loss of more than Rs3 billion to the national treasury.

'Ensure attendance'

Meanwhile, another accountability court ordered to ensure the attendance of all the accused, including Dr Asim, nominated in the Rs17-billion corruption reference.

The counsel for the accused Iqbal Z Ahmed informed the court that his client is admitted at a hospital and hence, is unable to appear before the court. The court adjourned the hearing till November 9, due to Ahmed's absence.
