Sexual harassment

Letter October 29, 2019
Those found involved in harassment should be caught and punished in accordance with the law

KECH: A sexual harassment scandal recently erupted at the University of Balochistan. Female students were being filmed by secret cameras installed in washrooms and smoking areas inside the campus. According to FIA officials, the videos that were recorded were highly personal and involved the mingling of male and female students. Balochistan University is one of the biggest educational institutions in Balochistan where many students are enrolled. Due to the recent issue families may not send their daughters to study at an institution where they would not find their daughters in safe environs. I have zero tolerance for sexual harassment and mysogynists. We should never accept such acts from any management or any department and it they do tend to happen we should fight back with full force. You can publicly snatch my rights but not my dignity.

Balochistan is regarded as the least developed of the provinces in Pakistan, and national and international statistics bear this out. The female literacy rate in the province is 33.5% as compared to 52% for the rest of the country, according to the Pakistan economic survey of 2018-19. One can easily predict that after many decades, very little number of females will be engaged in institutions as such incidents can confine them to their houses. The vice chancellor should resign. Those found involved in harassment should be caught and punished in accordance with the law.
