Media and Islamophobia

Rise of Islamophobia has become a great threat and a major challenge for the world today

KARACHI: The rise of Islamophobia has become a great threat and a major challenge for the world today. One must not forget that 9/11 added fuel to the fire in spreading the fear of Islamic extremism in the hearts of all non-Muslim communities. The situation has become more alarming since propaganda against Muslims through the media has increased. They misrepresent actual facts and figures to divert the attention of people by changing the concept of the Islam as a “Religion of peace” to “Religion of Islamic Terrorism” and “Arabophobia”. Furthermore, the term Islamophobia climbed one more step of the ladder when certain tactics were used by the media such as framing Muslim names to be more frightening, making comics and moulding the term “Jihad” and expanding its misconception in other parts of the world. This has generated negative slogans, promoting the ban on burka and other face-covering veils. It has created a stereotype against Muslim women and their rights. In other words, as a citizen, we need to be more careful in blindly following in the footsteps of media and think more rationally and logically before swallowing the inappropriate information on such political matters.
