Sindh police detain 36 students for beating up FUUAST VC

Case registered against members of student union for allegedly holding their VC hostage

KARACHI: A case was registered on Wednesday against the attack on the vice chancellor of The Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology (FUUAST) under sections of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) pertaining to holding someone hostage, death threats, foul language, vandalism and others.

Members of a student union at the varsity allegedly held Vice Chancellor Altaf Hussain hostage on Tuesday and beat him.

A case has been registered at Aziz Bhatti Police Station in this regard under Sections 337Ai, 504, 506, 342, 147, 148, 149 of the PPC on behalf of the varsity's campus officer, Asif Ali.

Some 15 members of the student union, identified as Sajid Ali, Siraj, Fazil Shah, Israr, Babar, Ali Mehdi, Mubashir, Asif Hussain, Younis, Qaiser Abbas, Zulfiqar, Kazim, Khalil Abbas, Shafiq, Imran and another 40 to 50 men whose identity could not ascertained, have been nominated in the case.

Meanwhile, Aziz Bhatti Police arrested more than 36 members of the student union during a raid at the Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology, located on University Road, after the alleged attack on the vice chancellor.

Aziz Bhatti SHO Adeel Afzal said that those arrested include several of the accused nominated in the case.

Police are raiding various places to arrest the other accused who have been nominated, he added.

Taking notice of the incident, Sindh IGP Dr Syed Kaleem Imam issued directives for legal action to be taken against the perpetrators of the attack.

He said that the involved elements should be identified with the help of the varsity's teachers.
