Waste management in Sukkur

Letter October 17, 2019
A number of garbage containers have been placed in the city, but things remain unchanged

SUKKUR: Have you ever thought of how much garbage your family throws away each day? Where does all that trash go? We think that the trash we throw actually goes away, but in reality, the garbage piles up along the roads and streets.

Besides, the residents of Sukkur generate waste at a faster pace than the disposal of waste is carried out. Due to this, tons of waste end up on streets and roads in many parts of the city and even in those areas which are considered better than the others.

Those managing the affairs of Sukkur have placed a number of garbage containers in many parts of the city, but the things remain unchanged. Some people are using those containers and some are not. People are throwing their waste at the roadside; on empty plots or on the backside of their houses. It seems they just don’t care about the negative consequences of this kind of garbage disposal or about the cleanliness of the city.

Besides, the management of the city is also inefficient at times. They are not removing the waste that is disposed of into those garbage containers and people have no other option except to throw their waste next to those bins. A few residents have now started to set the garbage on fire and the smoke that is created through burning causes serious issues for people having respiratory problems, for kids and the elderly.

This smoke produces a variety of toxic substances that are released into the air and is one of the leading causes of climate change in our country. This problem of waste management should be addressed as quickly as possible because efficient management of waste will lead us to a safe and healthy environment.
