The tombstones in Rabwah’s graveyards tell a macabre tale. The graves of the men killed in the attacks on Ahmadi places of worship in Lahore – retired army officers and young factory workers among them – rest with the dozens killed due to the persecution of the Ahmadiyya community.
The graveyards have been defiled in the past as locals have released animals in the graveyards or trod on the graves.
Other tombstones in a row show how entire families were systematically killed.
“If you knock at any door in Rabwah, you will find a story of persecution,” says Amir Mahmood, who works at the Jamaat Ahmadiyya’s press section.
One door leads to a prominent Ahmadi family from Mardan. Despite years of harassment, lawsuits, imprisonment and a kidnapping, the family’s men vowed to stay in Mardan. Four of them were gunned down. “After my father’s assassination I told my husband to be more careful. But he wasn’t scared,” says Rabia Mehmood, who was expecting her first child when her husband was killed.
Another door leads to Bushra Siddiqui’s family. She lives with her two widowed daughters, whose husbands were killed because of their faith.
Siddiqui’s daughter Asma Ahsan says her husband was praying at Darul Zikr in Lahore when it was besieged last May. She received a phone call from him, informing her that he was safe. Later, she learned that he had been killed. To add insult to injury, several neighbours did not offer condolences.
While the May 2010 carnage highlighted the systematic campaign of violence against Ahmadis, it did not end there. Three days later, a man entered Naimatullah’s house in Narowal district and stabbed him to death. His daughter Sidra recalls waking up to an “awful noise”. She rushed to the courtyard, where her dying father lay. The assassin was caught a few hours later, roaming around a seminary after Fajr prayers. He was reportedly ‘inspired’ to kill Naimutallah after being incited by local clerics.
“Nobody is safe in this country,” says Malik Munawwar Ahmad, the 78-year-old head of Darul Ziafat, which carries out the decades-old tradition in the community of housing and feeding travellers.
For Ahmadis, every day brings forth new incidents of harassment. In Vehari, clerics recently called for the Kalima to be erased from Ahmadi places of worship. The Jamaat’s representative in Vehari says the threat - from the Khatam-e-Nabuwwat movement and the Majlis-e-Ahrar - emanated from a land dispute over an Ahle Hadith mosque, which was unrelated to the Ahmadiyya community. He said the community would not give in to the clerics’ threats and would wait for the area administration’s decision.
“There was always opposition to us, but the 1974 and 1984 amendments created a storm,” says Ahmad. “But our silent protest is being recorded with God, and He will announce His decision.”

@Morpheus: To correct the history, The only general who laid down his life on the frontline was Gen Iftikhar Janjua, an ahmadi officer. Gen Akhtar Malik died in Ankara, Turkey in road accident
@rageofbaloch:Dear brother thanks for your advice but Ahmadies are already very very united but they don`t go against the teachings of Islam.
@rageofbaloch:
JazakAllah. We have no fear because we trust in GOD. Love for all, hatred for none. Humanity comes first.
Salam Saba Imtiaz
Very Thank you Express Tribune and Saba for publishing these horrific stories of persecution of Ahmadis in Pakistan. May Allah keep Ahmadis of Pakistan safe from the religious thugs (Mullahs) about whom Holy Prophet(saw) also warned the Ummah 1500 years ago.
Thanks & Regards
Intolerance has become a trademark of our society. Educated or Non Educated both type of people are suffering from it. Unless we overcome our shortcoming we can't create a society full of Love and Care for Each Other.
It is no doubt a bold story & bravery of reporter or newspaper. From years Ahmadiyyah sect is facing persecution , Physical persecution is no doubt disturbs a lot but Ahmadis are facing moral and social persecution also , Neighbors don't talk with them in most areas , In schools , colleges and Universities they face hatred and taunts or sometimes biasness of teachers also . Ahmadiyyah Jammat is victim of State-Sponsored Terrorism also , Why don't anyone take action against open preaching of hatred against Ahmadiyyah Jammat? They also pay taxes here to live , They give their lives for Pakistan , They are also true loyal Pakistanis and took part in creation !!. May Allah give all of us courage to hear different opinions
JAZAKALLAH ET and Saba.for talking about what is reality. I just want to say to those who ask about parsis, cristians and other minorities. I want to ask from them that do they have any law against them like 298(b) & 298(c)? This country has not that Islam which our Holly Prophet (peace be upon him) has preached. It has Islam what the MULLAS teach.
You wrote a bold story. Its all due to mix the politics in Faith and State...We as Pakistanis look clerics in the eyes of broad minded people. If we want to see the progress and prosperity of Pakistan, we should get rid of it.
thanks for good story. keep it up
@Ashfaq: May God have mercy on you. Such ignorance and hate and abuse of force will eventually destroy the whole of Pakistan. "Ya zulm mitay ga dhartee say ya dhartee khud mit jayay gee! [Either injustice, inequity and terror will be brought to an end in the Country or it will end up destroying the Country itself] These are the prophetic words of Hazrat Mirza Tahir Ahmad, Khalifatul Masih IV (rahmahullah) and we see these words coming true so, so, so very sadly in Pakistan....We have seen this happen so many times in history, yet people fail to see. First atrocities are committed against one section of society, but soon another section is identified and then another and it goes on and on and on till in the end the whole society is engulfed in flames of hatred and internecine warfare and death and destruction become the order of the day and night! Has hatred so blinded you Ashfaq that you still fail to see these truths?
Very sad state of affairs and what the world must be wondering about this country.
@Morpheous
It was General Iftikhar Hussein Janjua the hero of the Rann of Kutch who was martyred in 1971 war, not General Akhar Hussein Malik.
General Malik was one the great war hero's of the 1965 war, and later went on to serve as Pakistan's ambasador at Cento in Turkey.He was a stauch patriot and had he not been replaced by Yahya Khan at the height of the battle of Chamb Jaurian, when he was about to take Akhnor and thus Kashmir. Z.A. Bhutto at thetime stated “Had General Akhtar Malik not been stopped in the Chamb-Jaurian Sector, the Indian forces in Kashmir would have suffered serious reverses, but Ayub Khan wanted to make his favorite, General Yahya Khan, a hero.”.His brother Lt.Gen.Abdul Ali Malik fought heroically in 65/71 and was called the hero of Chawinda, the biggest land battle involving tanks since WW2.
All three Generals were proud Pakistani patriots who in one case gave his life for Pakistan. They were also Ahmadi Muslims and died with the Kalima "There is no God but Allah and Muhammad is his Messenger" on their lips.
Minorities are treated with 'hatred' and killed but the fact is that these are ONLY Ahmadis who undergo LEGITIMIZED PERSECUTION., No country in the whole wide world has a constitution which allows assassination of it's own people.
thanks for writing the truth. The fact is, you have visited Rabwah and have seen all this through your eyes..it is very unfortunate that those people who don't even know our philosophy and religious beliefs, have not observed our community closely, have not even visited Rabwah, declare us as non Muslims....thanks for writing. i hope you don't get into trouble for writing all this...May GOD bless you
Thank you for the article, but what a shame that people of Pakistan have such a superfluous knowledge of the history of the making of this country. Some hard facts, if someone wants to investigate - can be found: 1. When Quaide Azam backed off during the round table and went back to England, it was on the insistence of the 2nd Khalifa of the Ahmadiyya community, through the Imam of the London mosque at that time, he was persuaded back; 2. Ch. Zafarulla Khan, an Ahmadi, pleaded the case for Kashmir and Hyderabad (Deccan); 3. Ch. Zafarulla Khan, an Ahmadi, represented the case for Palestine in the UN; 4. Among the pioneers of the 'green revolution' during Ayub Khan era was an Ahmadi, who later joined the World Bank; 5. The only army general ever martyred on a war front was an Ahmadi (Akhtar Malik - 1965) 6. The only Pakistani nobel lauriet was an Ahmadi; 7. Despite all hatred, more non-ahmadis seek cardio treatment at the Ahmadi Hospital in Rabwah than Ahmadis; 8. Despite all hatred and persecution, no Ahmadi has ever resorted to violence... Can the so called "Constitutional Muslims" match these facts.... I think the only reason Pakistan has not progressed is because of this mind set which is still stuck up in sand somewhere. If you seriously look at what Pakistan is going through, Pakistan has not seen peace since 1974 when state took it upon itself to decide our religion for us - and it never will as long as these laws persist.
Fact is discrimination and persecution happens in both India and Pakistan. Both countries are guilty,. I Pakistan however the discrimination is institutionalized, in India it is criminalized. Pakistan, being an Islamic country all non-muslims are second class citizens. Read your constitution and see what offices minorities can hold.
@Ashfaq: Truly you reflect the need why your subcontinent is so dark that you Needed Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (may Allah be pleased with him) to be sent as a reformer to your people.I want to inform you that the state of Pakistan will soon be out of the map if your people do not desist from persecuting the humble servants of Allah.
Here are my 2 cents
Separate religion from the State and implement only one mosque every 10 ~ 20 miles. Then may be in the future State will see everyone with equality. Till then Pakistan public is doomed and is moving towards dark ages.
The things happening all around pakistan are same in every province from security point of view. And making it unsecure also includes the name of Islam. Mullah teaching about there community may be good but the information about others they provide to the local bodies is unbelivable stories like things and just an attraction of people and to make anxious. To make aware of the reality is the basic problem in which no one is infront of it.
In reality, Present day so-called religious scholars ( Mullahs) have done more damage to the peaceful and wonderful religion Islam than even the worst enemy to this faith.Truely, tradiions of the Holy Prophet that latter day " Ulemas will be the worst creature", how true is this today.
@goggi:
let me get this straight as a rebuttle to all the facts i quoted u give me a one off story and then suggest that im painting an abstract picture? youv got to be joking me
wake up and smell the coffee ur secular india killed over 15k sikhs in 84 alone... im not even going to bother quoting other facts.. its rather evident ur incapable of acknolwdgeing the plight of minorities in india.................
STOP MKAING IT AN EGO ISSUE do some good for ur minorities... wer here admitting pakistan has done wrong.. wer taking steps to chnage.. how will u ever manage to do that if ur convinced india is a true secular state and that minorities are well taken care of.. and for the love of God stop drawing comparisons to make urself feel better...
Thanks Saba for such bold comments.
I would like to thanks Miss Saba Imtiaz for this article. People like Saba Imtiaz has to come forward to raise there voice against fanatic Mullah who instigate to kill innocent people. A small note for Mr Ashfaq. Sir, which scholars and supreme court you are taliking about who are asking Ahmadis to use different names. Just for your information these scholars do not even agrees with each other on religious matters. They call each other a Kafir and you are accusing Ahmadis that we consider a non ahamdi a Kafir? Respectfully you are the one who is distorting the facts not us. Ahmadis are peaceful law abiding citizen where they are living. In your article you have mentioned Ismailis and Bohris that they hae discriminated form the main stream Islam. So you think they are Naooz billah kafir too. Please stop this hypocracy and open your eyes. In 1974 the pakistan assembly declared ahmadis as a minority non muslim. When Bhutto goverment was overthrown, the Zia regim printed a white paper agianst these so called scholars and member of parliments. No muslim beed any certification to be a Muslim from any scholar or supreme court. The faith is a matter between an individual and God. To learn about true Islam visit alislam.org
@Immortal Pakistani: Thank you for your keen comments and close observations on and about the achievements/place and position of Prof. Dr. Abdus Salam, the physicist Nobel Prize winner of Pakistan. He was really lucky to have been migrated to UK at the right time of research studies. Otherwise one say that had he not accepted the the British offer of the teaching/research assignment at the Imperial/royal institute of Physics, he would not have been allowed to 'live' to see the dawn of day of winning the covetted Nobel Prize. Here one may recall the sad memories of Prof. dr. Naseem Babar of the Physics Deptt. Quaid-e-Azam University, Islamabad. He had, like Dr. Salam, keen interest and depth for Physics and his colleagues in the Western universities believed he will one day win a Nobel Prize yes! that would have been the 2nd one for Pakistan. But one night,someone knocked at his door in the residential area of the University and when he opened the door, the man standing with his pistol killed Dr. Babar, then and there. The whole University, grieve-rdden and utterly shocked, was closed for three days to console and condole the sad demise of an ideal, papular science teacher of great potentials. The then Prime Minister, in the condolence message, assured the concerned that the culprit will be brought to book and justice will be done. But then, as usual, nothing was to happen. Only because the the science professor killed belonged to the Ahmadiyyia community.
I would like to my opinion among lot of other opinion above without indulging into debate of Ahmedies being Muslim or not. I would just like to suggest that one should not take incidents of atrocities towards ahmedies as an sequel of anti-ahmedies issue. there have been unrest and clashes among various sects of Islam in Pakistan, Shia vs Sunn, Brailvi vs Deobani, etc and all resulted in killings of 100s of followers of each sect. There have been proven facts of outsiders involvement or foreign forces to cause disgust or hatred among the people of Pakistan. We have seen terrorists attack in the form of suicidal bombing with out any discrimination of sect. So one should not endeavor to initiate yet another non-issue. I agree there had been incidents like mentioned by Saba but nowadays there is nothing like that happening in Pakistan, non of the sect is trying to target ahmadies and please don't divert the people towards something which is not anywhere in Pakistan. Pakistan already have lot of problems to focus.
Thank you Saba and ET for honest appraisal of the criminal behaviour against Ahmadis in Pakistan! Please keep up the good work!
My compliments to Saba Imtiyaz for her bold and fearless writings on the plight of Ahmadi Muslims in Pakistan. Jazak'Allah for the courage she has shown and for highlighting the persecution of an entire community
Nice article. It's about time that Pakistanis start to think like humans and not animals who act on the motion of their leashes. I condemn violence and injustice at any level, in fact I condemn also how dogs and donkeys are treated in Pakistan however, the disgusting part of the whole picture is that ahmadis claim to be superior than other sects but their thoughts and actions are not a bit different than any other radical sect, hence the anger and dislike when other minorities are mentioned and it's no longer all about them. Their leader's speeches in a country where he is taking refuge, are filled with hatred towards culture of the society which protects him. He constantly brain washes people that they must segregate themselves from THOSE people in order to be pure. He openly denounces their life style, society and social activities yet, most people of his community are refugees and feeding on the charity of those IMPURE people. Hypocritical and with its own agenda, the setup is just to support a new ideology which benefits a lineage of self imposed ahmadi khalifas and in turn, leads to deaths of many innocent people killed by those who have agendas of their own but not different by any means.The jamat constantly ousts people who do not abide by the dictatorship of the so called khilafat. Those people who speak for themselves are ridiculed in meetings and letters are issued for their social boycott.They are forced to not call themselves ahmadis because they no longer fulfill the criteria defined by the jamat yet, they cry when muslim mullahs do the same to them. Hatred as we see all around us, has it's roots deep in the fictitious, self- righteousness that forces us to look down upon others to the extend that we either kill them or wish that they be killed. Ahmadis can't kill anyone due to lack of power but they joyously celebrate all natural disasters which happen in Pakistan. I have seen many of them personally enjoying and celebrating mass deaths as a result of earth quacks and floods. Somehow, it is a sign of support for them from the divine power and at that time, they expose themselves.
The persecution and violence against any community including the Ahmadia community on the basis of some ones faith is highly condemn able.
But Jamiat Ahmadia has always been proud that they have created Pakistan. Would they now repent what they have created is a hell for themselves and others who are being killed in hundreds everyday for having a sect which is different from others or they belong to different nationality or they are sons of the souls and want to speak their own mother tongues.
One can appreciate that Ahmadia Jamiat has remained peaceful and has suffered immensely. But the country which they contributed to make is source of continuous suffering for many of its citizens on different pretexts.- right from Bengalis to Balochs lately.
Its right time for all including Ahmadia Jamat to be part and parcel of democratic struggle to get rid of all this nonsense which we have undergone for last 65 years. Its high time Ahmadia Jamait get themselves away from the anti democratic forces for their own interests..
Thank you Saba for great article, Thanks for letting the people know about the persecution against ahmadis
@Ashfaq: Mr Ashfaq,I am a muslim but not certified by any suprime court or Ulema,now by reading your side story i am thinking i should go to supreme court and ulema for seeking a certificate that i am a muslim.can i know which version of islam your Supreme court and Ulema offered? pakistan is devloping towards stonageistan
Excellent article. May this this open eyes of Pakistani's who are condoning violence with their excruciating silence.
@Manoj: ERR WE remaned a province after the pakhtons what are u on about mate!
@Kramer: ok just cuz india claims to be a secular state doesnt mean it is.. if ur old enough to type you old enough to know the difference!
also pls stop playing holier than thou the list of riots and number of people who avhe died in these riots in india is massive.......
1984 anti sikh riots: 10k-17k people burned alive in their homes, 50k sikhs displaced 1992 hindu muslim riots: over 1200 people died and over 200K people relocated 2002 Gujarat riots where over 790 muslims died Between 1964 and 1996, thirty-eight incidents of violence against Christians were reported
lets not compare!!
again stop making this an india pakistan thing.. this is what happens everytime one of u indians decides to post a comment it takes away formthe importance of the article.. so just stop!!!!
@shmail:
You are a citizen of a country, which killed, converted or chased away millions of Hindus, Christens, Bengalis, ahamadi, Baluchi, Pakhtoons from your country.
Yes In india riots has taken place and we are ashamed of it. We condemn ourselves for the henious crime like riots which occasionaly takes place between two religios, lingusitic or regional groups.
No words are enough to condemn this but let me know what moral right you have to criticse our record towards minority. forget the minority, Bengalis were majority in undivided Pakistan and you tourtured, raped and killed them and they were forced to ask for their independence.
God bless you and Pakistan.
@shmail: Firstly, India is not trumpeting itself as a Islamic country, the question you should ask is, why cannot Pakistan protect it's own Muslim 'brothers' from being persecuted. Unfortunately, like most Pakistanis, your problem is that you look through a warped sense of parity with India and bury your head in the sand. Secondly, Indian Muslims almost number those in Pakistan, I wonder why they choose to live in India, I will tell you why, you are much poorer and more radicalised, you have no prospect for growth and likely to self implode in the near future. Finally, learn to accept diversity, now that you have killed or forceably removed most non muslim minorities from your country, you now turn your attension to those who are weakest in the Muslim brotherhood. As a society, fix your own problems first before you indulge in your typical rehtoric against India.
Ps, riots in India(??), how about we talk about the suicide attacks every day in Pakistan, especially in places or worship, ever thought about that you ignorant fool.
@indian guy:
heres are SOME of the Indians ethnic violence stats :
Gujarat riots in 2002 Assam in 1983 anti-Sikh riots of 1984 the Godhra riots in 2002 anti-Christian violence in 2008,
between 2005 and 2009 as many as 648 people were killed and 11,278 injured in 4,030 incidents of communal violence.
you ahve no right to come here and undermine the plight of Ahmedi's by stating Hindus too need protection when minorities in your own country are burning!!!!!
yes hindus minorities deserve to be treated better in pakistan like any other minority infact they should to put it correctly be treated as equals... but this article is not about that its about a specific community!
@Indian guy Well at least we don't have riots like in India where thousands of non-hindus get killed.
Its not only Ahmedis but balochs, pashtoons, hindus and christians too. its about time minorities in pakistan unite against the evil and fight our own battle. Balochs have already started it. Ahmedis need to organise themselves as well.
Very shocking indeed. people should not dorget the Hindus who get killed in Pakistan. They are also persecuted with equal hatred, but they dont have graves as a proof, since they cremate their dead.
Hope Pakistan knocks some sense into itself.
The nationalised educational institutions of Rabwah/Chenab Nagar, were to be handed back to the parent body when an agreement was signed with Education ministry/deptt. about sixteen years ago according to which the central body of schools, Sadr Anjuman Ahmadiyya , Rabwah, deposited more than one crore Rupees in mid-90s, as staff salary for one year. But when mulla/maulivis learnt of it, they started hue and cry and put pressure on lower level functionaries and made them demand that not one year, but three years' staff salary be got deposited as gauranteed money. This was againt all norms of civilised way of life in human society. Can you believe it that during the last 15/16 years, neither the schools nor the deposited money has been returned to the Ahmadiyya Parent body of Rabwah schools /colleges. Will someon in the govt./administration of The Islamic Republic of Pakistan let the poor people of Rabwah Town know where to go and at which door they should knock for justice and an honourabl worldly life in this age of global village.
Just a few days ago I was lamenting the lack of role models we have for your youth in pakistan. I say this with great shock, that a majority of our population are unaware of the accomplishments of the ONLY Nobel prize winning scientist Pakistan has ever produced, Dr. Abdus Salam. Not a street or institute named after him, no efforts to continue his research, and not even the slightest mention in the media on his birthday. All this just because he was an ahmadi. For those who don't know, YES we do have our very own Nobel Prize Winner (Physics). For those who do know, take a bow in knowing that Dr. Abdus Salam has done the nation more proud than anyone else has. I don't belong to the ahmadi sect, but it doesn't take one to recognise his contribution to our nation.
Very nice article, We are happy to see someone is writing for Ahmadiyya Community.
Before the haters step in with their self-righteous comments: 1) Great article as usual, Saba and 2) a very disgusting corner in hell is reserved for both the perpetrators of this violence and those who stood by quietly letting it happen.
The fact of the matter is that every Ahmadi Muslim is carrying a painful story. After all they have neighbors, some neighbors are biased, they go to school/colleges/universities some teachers are biased, co-workers are biased, military officials are biased, bureaucrats and politicians are biased--let alone Ulemas of this time. Media generally is biased but here and there some brave journalists dare to take up the challenge. Overall it's tough to be an Ahmadi Muslim in this Islamic Republic of Pakistan.
First of all, Miss Saba Imtiaz I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart on showing courage and writing a series of articles on discrimination and persecution of Ahmadi Muslims in Pakistan and also highlighting our response to this ugly state sponsored persecution.
Sadly we lost another prominent lawyer and President of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association Nawabshah, Sindh, Pakistan last night. We have always showed patience and dear Mullahs n Anti Ahmadiyya mindset , as always we retaliated by DUA on last night's martyrdom. May God have mercy on you and Pakistan.
Pakistan is a country which is still advocating killings of innocent Ahmadi Muslims. If you look back, history tells us that who so ever killed innocent human beings just for their faith are doomed. Pakistan followed Afghanistan in persecuting us.
p.s remember how Hazrat Imam Abu Hanifa and other prominent scholars, sufis and saints were persecuted, imprisoned, tortured and killed by hate mongers? Pakistani Mullahs are sheer example of enemies of Humanity and Peace
Thank you Express Tribune and Saba for publishing these horrific stories of persecution of Ahmadis in Pakistan. May Allah keep Ahmadis of Pakistan safe from the religious thugs (Mullahs) about whom Holy Prophet(saw) also warned the Ummah 1500 years ago.
