Transgender rights

Letter October 12, 2019
There are still those that are being ignored

ISLAMABAD: Since our birth we are identified as mother or father, son or daughter and a girl or a boy. But digging deep into the intricacies of the transgender community, it is obvious that they are ‘different’ from the gender which is assigned to us at the time of birth. Even though we can see famous transgender celebrities, there are still those that are being ignored. The ignorance is in terms of rights such as lack of legal protection, healthcare services, issuance of legal citizen documentation, educational and job opportunities. The government should provide solution for the legal protection of the transgender community. It can be done by some sort of awareness initiative that educates the people about this. Harassment and stigma of transgenders can also be reduced by making some protection laws. The government should initiate healthcare reforms, since it is not meeting the needs of the transgender community; it should also take initiative to maintain their citizenship document with gender recognition. There should be equal job opportunities for them too.
