Sugar Potential: ‘Pakistan can produce over 6.5m tons’

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has the potential to produce more than 6.5 million tons of sugar annually and “we need to utilise maximum resources by curtailing its import and increasing export,” said Commerce Minister Makhdoom Amin Fahim in his message to the Pakistan Society of Sugar Technologists (PSST) for the new edition of Pakistan Sugar Book 2011. Sugar production is expected to be 3.77 million tons in fiscal 2011. Fahim said that workshops, seminars and conventions conducted by PSST for promotion of sugar technology have been very useful. He said that the book can help the country meet future challenges. Keeping in mind the sugar production potential of the country, the minister said the PSST would play its role in introducing new varieties of sugarcane.
