In a recent interview on the The Howard Stern Show, Robert Downey Jr, that is the Iron man himself, responded to Martin Scorsese's comment on Marvel movies not being "cinema."
Scorsese’s comments gained attraction after he compared the Marvel Cinematic Universe to “theme parks,” adding that, “It isn’t the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional and psychological experiences to another human being.”
Downey Jr. told Howard Stern on Monday that he acknowledges Scorsese’s nuance on Marvel films and appreciates his opinion, as a new perspective to what is being created.
“I appreciate his opinion because I think it’s like anything, we need all of the different perspectives so we can come to center and move on,” Downey Jr. said.
Stern probed Downey Jr., suggesting the actor was being “too nice” about Scorsese’s remark, to which he responded that he was being serious. To which Stern, sternly added a leading questioned, “Were you insulted when he said it’s not cinema? That somehow Iron Man isn’t cinema? It is cinema to me.”
Downey Jr. continued to say that Scorsese's comment alone is like saying “Howard Stern isn’t radio. It makes no sense to say it," making things even more confusing.
According to Variety, although Downey's response reiterated that he is not offended by Scorsese’s opinion on the superhero trend dominating Hollywood, he still felt proud about the impact his films are making among moviegoers.
“There’s a lot to be said for how these genre movies — and I was happy to be a part of the ‘problem’ if there is one — denigrated the era, the art form, of cinema. And, by the way, when you come in like a stomping beast and you eliminate the competition in such a demonstrative way, it’s phenomenal.”
Following which, he rhetorically cross questioned Stern saying, “Do you actually think Martin Scorsese is upset about Marvel movies?”
“Yes, yes I do,” Stern responded in affirmation. However, it seems Iron man had unlocked, yet another mind puzzle which only he knew the answer to.
