Hum Awards 2019 fashion: What could have been better?

From sari, to ruffles, to lehenga choli, we suggest some better style picks for these celebrities

KARACHI: Pakistani celebs showed up to the 7th Hum Awards event in Houston, Texas in an array of ensembles that were mostly misses and hits.

Despite an appreciated attempt to bring back traditional vibes, many missed the mark on the style front. Glam, sparkles, green, white and purple were the main themes of the night, with desi vibes all around. Stars such as Mawra and Urwa Hocane, Iqra Aziz, Ayesha Omar and Hania Amir made their presences felt but did they really?

Here is what could have lifted some of the outfits to a whole new level.

Iqra Aziz's ruffles

While we appreciate the Suno Chanda star’s attempt to be experimental, this look missed the mark. The Nomi Ansari creation was overdone, from the ruffles, asymmetry and all that bling. The interesting green shade could've been more elegant if it wasn't for all the extras, because it looked like Iqra was attending a fancy dress party. This look was very unlike the actor though. A clear fan of ruffles, Iqra has made some better choices in the past. See for yourself.

If there's both ruffles and asymmetry involved, the hair and everything else should be more simple. We much preferred these styles in comparison to her current choice. Although, we think Iqra could also venture away from ruffles for a while and experiment with something different now.

Marwa Hocane in a 'lehenga choli'

The actor's outfit choice seemed like a very last minute decision. It almost looked like the younger Hocane sister was attending a mehndi, not an awards show. However, green is totally in right now and seemed to be the colour of the evening. Mawra got on board with the trend in this traditional number but it just didn't standout.

Hajra Yamin in a bright fusion dress

If you're going to go lehenga choli, we much preferred Hajra Yamin's choice. Looking colourful and fresh in Hussain Rehar, the Pinky Memsaab actor looked young, fun and vivacious. We loved her wild curly hair as well as statement gold pieces by Hayat Lutfullah.

Urwa Hocane's white 'peshwas'

While white always looks clean and fresh, the elder Hocane sister could’ve stepped up her game.  We liked her loose flowing hair and simple makeup but overall, everything lacked the wow factor that a night at a glam event should have had. Urwa looked like she was heading out for Eid.

Sarah Khan's 'peshwas'

Sara Khan's cream peshwas was a more suitable choice for evening wear and looked elegant as well as traditional. The ravishing floor-length gown by Nilofer Shahid adorned with zardozi work and gold tassels, paired with a pure kimkhwab shawl - classic and enchanting!

Hania Amir and Ayesha Omar in saris

The 22-year old Hania really needed to have chosen a better thought-out ensemble. Although Hania is naturally gorgeous, such a strong purple should not be combined with so many over-the-top sequins. The sari added years on the youngster. Saris are coming back in for evening wear and this Nomi Ansari look could've been much better if it wasn't so predictable.

As for Ayesha, she opted for a more Hollywood look and exuded glam/luxe vibes in a coral pink gown. However, we felt her dress was kind of old school and would've been better in a deeper red or with different cut, perhaps.

The Karachi Se Lahore star then made a quick outfit change into a classy whote Élan creation which was a much better choice. Combining traditional and western vibes, the colour and cut was gorgeous and more suited for an awards night.
