Teachers’ Day

Letter October 05, 2019
Through academic forums, awareness is raised about the sanctity of the relationship between the teacher and the taught

SUKKUR: Every year 5th of October is observed as World Teachers’ Day to honour teachers for their noble contribution to the community. Through academic and social forums, general awareness is raised about the sanctity of the relationship between the teacher and the taught.

Parents too need to play a proactive role in the teacher-student relationship. Since the unkind practice of corporal punishment, once used to discipline students at school, is no longer being practised, it is now the responsibility of parents to advise their children to respect their teachers the same way they respect them. It has been observed that students show more respect for teachers who teach them their favourite subject or the subject they best understand. It is fair for students to praise their favourite teachers but that must not mean them disliking others that teach them the subject they find boring. In essence, students must not forget that all teachers deserve respect, for all put equal effort in teaching them. It is just their personal preference to choose teachers based on their subjects or the teaching method. Meanwhile, teachers should refrain from unfair remarks that embarrass students in front of their fellows because such offhand words, even said in a lighter mood, can badly sap their confidence. It is the teachers’ responsibility to correct the students’ weak personality traits without offending them. This would keep the learning minds from stereotyping the upholders of the noble profession as domineering and devoid of empathy. Teachers serve as role models; what they say and do has a big influence on students and society. They deserve respect and should stay enlightened.
