Police reforms

Letter October 03, 2019
The government should strive to promote cooperation between the two pillars of bureaucracy

LAHORE: Recently, a reform about the powers of provincial bureaucracy got media attention. It is said that some senior police officers threatened to quit if they were to work under the deputy commissioners. Afterwards, the IG Punjab succeeded in convincing the prime minister of the need to make a new draft of the planned police reforms.

It goes without saying that police reforms are necessary. But this is unacceptable as it would only widen the distance between two major pillars of bureaucracy, PAS and PSP. Collaboration and cooperation between these two groups is the need of the hour. The government should strive to promote cooperation between the two pillars of bureaucracy. The police should be consulted on every decision as it is a major stakeholder. On the other hand, if the police officers want to enhance the trust of people, they must get rid of this time-consuming battle and look forward to the betterment of the masses.
