Unusual rains in Karachi

Students faced utmost difficulties in reaching home from universities and colleges

KARACHI: This year Karachi is experiencing an extended rainy season. It is in a city that usually receives little rainfall. Since Sept 24th it rained everyday till Sept 27th. On Sept 27th, it was ferocious rain accompanied by lightning and thunder. On Sept 27th, the rainfall was so heavy that nearly all areas of the city presented the scene of urban flooding. Several people died. The rains damaged buildings and infrastructure and led to the loss of crops and livestock. Students faced utmost difficulties in reaching home from universities and colleges. Most roads were flooded. Most of the working class was stranded and were unable to reach home safely. Electricity wires snapped and lay on the flooded roads; delays were caused by several cars breaking down in water. Life was paralysed in the city due to the heavy rains. Rainwater stood on roads because most drains are choked. The government should improve the drainage system. Rainwater should be harvested and used for agricultural purposes. This year nature’s fury is matching the government’s indifference. I find it difficult to find a proper word to describe the situation.
