Student suicides

Letter September 27, 2019
According to sources, every 1 in 5 college students considers committing suicide because of stress

KARKI: Suicide is currently one of the highest causes of deaths among students. The suicide rate is higher among young men than young women. Suicide among Pakistani students is on the rise as recently 4 students committed suicide within a span of few days in Chitral. Suicides and mental health, in general, have never been taken seriously and the issue of student suicides remains without any research to understand its cause.

According to CBS News, 1 in 5 college students is so stressed out that they considered committing suicide. Between 6 to 8 per cent of college students report having serious suicidal thoughts but only around 1 per cent of them actually attempt suicide each year. According to a report, 1,100 college students commit suicide each year. School and college students must have counselling facilities to provide guidance and motivation to students in order to reduce this growing problem.
