Accountability judge Muhammad Bashir dismissed National Accountability Bureau (NAB)'s request for an extension in physical remand of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leaders and Imran – who is being investigated for alleged misuse of authority while awarding a 15-year contract for the LNG terminal. The case was closed in 2016 but reopened by NAB in 2018.
During the hearing, Khaqan submitted a statement wherein he claimed NAB official were harassing his business associates and others, forcing them to become ‘approvers’ against the former prime minister.
Khaqan said Mifta and Imran had been detained because they refused to become ‘approvers’.
The former premier told accountability court that he had been asked to submit financial details including food, gas and phone bills. He had filled out NAB questionnaires regarding Qatar LNG deal, Elengy Terminal, the appointment of public sector company heads and use of foreign office vehicles, government helicopters and airlines, and decisions he made during his stint in the Economic Coordination Committee and the federal cabinet.
Khaqan maintained that the inquiry against him was a “political vendetta and misuse of government institutions” to “demonise political opponents into submission and settling scores”.
