Musharraf’s assets: ‘Farmhouse in the capital, Rs80 million in coffers’
The Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) prosecutors informed an anti-terrorism court that former president Pervez Musharraf, who was declared a proclaimed offender in the Benazir Bhutto murder case, owns a farmhouse in the federal capital and has over Rs80 million in various bank accounts. The court had ordered confiscation of his movable and immovable assets, but the agency has yet to gather details.
The trial court declared Musharraf a proclaimed offender after he refused to appear before the court once his arrest warrants were issued. According to the information provided to special judge anti-terrorism court-III Shahid Rafique by special public prosecutor FIA Chaudhry Zulfiqar Ali, the former president has a five-acre farmhouse in Chak Shahzad. He also has 15 banks accounts, details of which were provided by the State Bank of Pakistan.
FIA officials informed the court during the proceedings at Adiala Jail that they have yet to receive any answer from Board of Revenue members of the four provinces, GHQ and Defence Housing Authority concerning details of Musharraf’s property. FIA investigators have accused Musharraf of failing to provide adequate security to the former PPP chairperson and issuing death threats to discourage her from returning to Pakistan for the 2008 general election.
The court provided former city police officer Rawalpindi Saud Aziz and SP Khurram Shahzad copies of statements of 96 prosecution witnesses. Their lawyers have also asked for statements of police officers cited as prosecution witnesses in the case. The two police officers obtained post-arrest bail after they were accused of security lapses which resulted in Benazir’s death on December 27, 2007 and for attempting to destroy evidence from the crime scene outside Liaquat Bagh.
The hearing was subsequently adjourned till July 23.
Five other men including Aitzaz Shah, Sher Zaman, Abdul Rasheed, Hasnain Gul and Rafaqat Hussain are in jail on charges of being part of the murder conspiracy plotted by Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan and abetting the suicide bomber who blew himself up near Bhutto’s car.

@Dr. Saleem Siddiqi: Go and pay to hear Musharraf speak when all most Pakistanis want to do is hold him accountable for all the instability and terrorism he brought under 9 years of dictatorship. You don't seem to understand why people in the world are interested in hearing anyone speak of the crisis in that part of the world. It has to do with the fact that it is in the headlines. As for Musharraf's speaking skills, the guy shows little skill whatsoever and I'm not talking about his bad English.
Musharraf's tenure can best be described as a lost opportunity. He had brought so much promise and his seven point program was so full of hope. What did we get instead? An imported Prime Minister who was most adept at money laundering. When the steel mill deal floundered courtesy of the Chief Justice, he was fired. The very people condemned for corruption were brought back by the magic of the NRO. Is corruption only defined as actual stealing? When you can garner obscene privilege legally in a desperately poor country like Pakistan, does it become justified? We should peep into our conscience and see what justice such extravagance does to the people of Pakistan. Can we honestly be comfortable with such 'leaders'?
Musharraf was the army chief, president and chief executive of Pakistan for a period of around 8 years. Once you retire from government service in Pakistan (judges, bureaucrats, army personal, etc.) you get a 2-3 plots which are easily worth 15-20 million. Saying that Musharraf was dishonest is absolute insanity. If Imran Khan can live in a mansion worth 100 million (who was only the captain of the cricket team) then why can't Musharraf own a house which is 10 million.
As for his properties abroad, he owns only a small flat in England. The 50 million dollar property is owned by Zardari, while Nawaz Sharifs son has 4 billion against his name.

While it would be naïve to suggest that politicians are not corrupt in this country, it is quite befuddling that after wasting millions of dollars and several long years, neither former Senator Saifur Rehman nor General Musharraf could prove a single corruption charge against President Zardari. However, his name has become synonymous with corruption in Pakistan, thanks in part to the ill focused media that is dedicated more to incite and invoke rather than inform the public. Politicians are easy targets and who wants to do all the risky hard work if the same rewards can be had by shooting down “sitting ducks”.
In a patently non-transparent manner, Pakistan’s military complex has commanded and spent disproportionately large portions of the budget over nearly six and a half decades under the rubric of defence expenditure.
It is common knowledge that the financial largesse alone apportions an accumulated Rs.35 million to a Lt. General upon retirement, and it is no secret that General Musharraf and his coterie of mediocre advisers and confidantes pocketed huge sums of public money. And yet in the eyes of the public, the moral hazard plagues only the Zardaris and the Sharif’s together with an occasional admiral, a middle order public servant, huddled with scores of low ranking judicial and district management officers.
Among other areas, a cursory review of the commissions arising from PAF’s procurements of only spares for its fleet of F-16s runs into millions of dollars, allegedly vacuum cleaned by either serving and or retired members of the armed forces. Exactly how and who has benefitted from only a fragment of the defence related “value chains” are questions that our investigative journalists should be spending a lot more time on.
As for his lectures, most of General’s speaking engagements were commissioned by highly mediocre universities in the west, more so in the aftermath of the publication of his rather uncelebrated In the Line of Fire.
Musharraf made some errors of judgment in his time but his sincerity towards Pakistan is beyond question. That alone is enough to rank him as Pakistan's best leader after Jinnah.

How a salaried persons can get this alot of money , he was an employee of army, while he has no other business, so how a person who is just employee can get these million of rupees , he has no billions of rupees , but millions of rupees has also great importance , his assets must be sealed and in the custody of the government , these asstes must be in the custody of the government. because these are the money of pakistani people.

Rs.8 crores. This is pittance! I wouldn't bat an eyelid at this amount. As a salaried person, earning a fraction of what Musharraf as a General must have earned, I have some savings. Deal with the big rocks guys! Worry about the hundreds of million DOLLARS that others have syphoned out of this country's hungry mouths. We all know who those guys are !!
Many of my friends talking that Gen. Musharraf should come and face the court. I don't think that any judge will be ready to hear his case as all of them have been a party against him. And the history of Suprement court already happened to hang a person who is called a judicial murder. So if his case if possible should be listened by some judges who should be considered impartial. Then I would also suggest that there should also be a commission to enquire either his 9 years were much progressive than the so called democratic elements.

It was military higherups who ordered the crime scene to be hosed down. Some one has to answer for that. Most of Pak history and even today, its Pakistan army that rules Pakistan and has made what Pakistan is today. The repression in East Pakistan, the humilation of 1971, Kargil and the ultimate folly of breeding terrorists as strategic assets is a gift of army to the Pak nation. In shoprt, no other institution has contributed so much to Pak's demise as the corrupt establishment has.

Double standards are when people malign politicians but give brave commando a pass. And what "common people" are you talking about? The common people in Baluchistan are vying for Mush's blood. The "common people" in Sindh voted for PPP again and again. The "common people" in KP blame Mush for installing MMA on them and destroying them. Whatever the assets he has, but no doubt Pakistan made progress in his tenure. I know, Red mosque and judiciary are a black spots on his profile, but what is most important is Pakistan. Keep in mind, I am an orthodox, and on many accounts of enlighten and moderation, I am totally against him, but I still prefer him compare to others.
Ask the people even today - They would like an alliance of Imran Khan, Musharraf and MQM ideally. Great meeting of the minds and strength and intelligence to uplift Pakistan from its current sorry state.

What Gen Musharraf has is total white money therefore finger pointing is un warranted.But for his two blunders NRO and sacking of Chief Justice and judges of higher Judiciary, his performance is rated good.True he also obliged his friends out of the way forgetting that these acts would form charge sheet against him. He misread his own created kings party PML(Q) who disowned him the moment he was in trouble and welcomed his resignation.His another blunder has been to appoint Ch Shujaat as PM of Pakistan who could hardly speak thus bringing bad name to his good name.
He is not the only one to own Farm House, there are brigadiers, Major Generals and senior politicians who all have un lawfully converted farm houses in to palatial houses.These Farm houses were to grow vegetables under clean enviornamnets not to build houses.It is time Suo Motto is taken and these houses converted back to real farm houses to teach lesson to rulers who continue to break laws without any fear of accountability.

Its quiet shocking how come of my fellow countrymen on this comment section are trying to prove Mush is better than the current and past leaders. Have you guys forget Mush's Kargil misadventure, which not only put US and EU in India's side but also got us the name as a "rogie nation". How about the 100's of Pakistani soldiers who were left to die on the icy heights of Kargil as the "brave commando" made a hasty retreat. And who about the stupid act of killing Bugti, which resulted in a low intensity conflict to turn into a full fledged insurgency in Baluchistan. What about calling Pakistani women "who will do anything to get a foreign passport even get raped"? The so called economic revolution in Mush's time was plain american dollars at work. Our issue has always been Mush like yahoo's who break the law, constitution etc to get into the president house. Democracy has not failed us but the dictatorship have. Not a single democratic regime ever finished its term in power but the dictators rule us for decades and when out of government jet off to foreign pastures. Mush's chek shahzad house was built when he was still the president of this god forsaken country. He bought his condos in Dubai and London before he bailed the country and started going on lectures. He might be less corrupt but he has committed a treason against the country by starting a war, leaving pak soldiers to die and over throwing a democratic government.
Some friends are only talking about the decision of Judges and NRO which Gen. Musharraf has admitted as non popular decision and mistake respectively. What about his rest services rendered to Pakistan in his 9 years tenure. No body talks about his positive steps like Gawadar Port, Tax Documentation first time in the history of Pakistan, Construction of bridges and roads specially Karachi, Handling Kashmir Earthquake effectively and free of any scandal, remarkable investment, Handling India who moved considerable size of his army on Pakistan Boarder for a period of 11 months, Refusing USA to send Army for Iraq and then in Afghanistan, convincing a large number of Head of State visiting Pakistan increasing respect to the Nation, Mega projects in Baluchistan, highlighting Coal mines importance (Dr Mubarik working these days in THAR), Bye Bye to IMF and taking loan on Pakistani condition not world bank conditions as before, getting India on table to talk about Jammu and Kashmir and first time declared by them as disputed area, Bus Service between two parts of Kashmir, encourging people to people contact between Pakistan and Indian defusing tention. I also remember his speech in United Nation in which he said Pakistani Madares are biggest NGO of the world except few. Independent Media, many channels and hundreds of people getting job, revolution in IT; mobile companies with hundreds of people on job now. He being an Army General proved a real democratic. We should be realistic.

All those who closed their eyes and critising Musharraf at this time and present state of affairs, are not sincere Pakistanies. They are the people who helped Zardari to rule us with his most corrupt Prime Minister. Just see the record what was growth rate at his time and what is now. It is dropped from 8.2% to 2%. No Electricity, No water, No Gas, No investment, Our own industries are closed, No. CNG. We all should pray to Allah to forgive us and give us a leader like Musharraf or better them him, regardless he comes through any way. We need a person who work for the betterment of poor people and for Pakistan. We need security to our kids, we need water, electricity, schooling, medicines NOT 22-23-24 tarmeems as it will not give us food. Even though Musharraf made some mistakes, overall his leadership had been much more better than the current leadership. He was never considered a dictator. He has been honest and loyal and a great patriot for Pakistan. Where does PPP leadership stand with their wealth accumulation and that should be the question. This government should focus on caring for the sufferings of the common citizens, its livelihood, its security and so many other crucial things rather than spending time and resources on their own politics of finger pointing. There are bigger things to do for this nation.

Vienna,10-07-2011 I read two contradictory comments, one says General (rtd unhurt physically) earns now in retirement a million dollars per lecture and has so far given 100 lectures earning 100 million dollars.That does not explain if the lecture paid by shoes in U.K. remains excluded. The other comment cites Dawn on line having said Gen. Musharraf gives a lecture for 200,000 dollars! Who should be taken seriously. If that is all he has, he is officially the poorest former head of state of all time. 1 Million USD is all he has to his name. Thats less than what an average new yorker has in their bank account at that age.
The guy is the real deal. He has an entire judiciary after him of the 5th most populous nation on earth and all they can get on this man is 1 Million USD in assets.

Gen Pervez Musharraf was an honest and simple Army Officer throughout his Army service. As I know him and have worked under him; he never showed any desire for money or property. He was a generous friend and normally took care of others.
he made some mistakes,and he is the only pakistani leader who accepted his mistakes infront of whole world through tv channels.so what else is left behind? love you musharraf. his main characteristics......he is courageous,active,hardworking,can face big challenges,fearless,got leadership qualities,has strong contacts with leaders of gulf,an many more

How many two star and above generals, admirals, air marshals has this country churned out over the last 40 years ??? Musharraf's wealth could be taken as average for this lot. It does seem like a staggering amount of money for a very poor performance when one looks at the pathetic state of the country. Corrupt Musharaff literally sold Pakistan to the devil and is now living in luxury in Dubai and UK. He personally made at least $50 million on the sale of state telecommunications assets. Musharraf must be hunted down and tried for all his crimes, including treason.

Inshallah Musharaf will come out clean one day and will return to lead this country again as he is a real honest and statesman who has vision and has courage to talk even with his enemies - eye to eye.
Every day we hear a new financial scandal of PPP and PML-N. But todate, not a single corruption case was even heared or pointed out against Musharaf which is a great credit. We need back such a great leader to lead this country to correct corridors of progress.

The poor lifetime salaried Mush could only leave 8 crore Rs, in Pakistani banks. All his foreign earnings and commissions are in foreign banks. This was the extra chunk of change that he must have forgotten before running away from Pakistan. How many honest salaried officials have that kind of cash simply laying around in addition to all the real estate and foreign assets? It must be remembered like any other military dictator, Mush has no charges of corruption. When you are in uniform there is lot of burkat in your salary!
