This is with reference to Faria S Syed’s Speaker’s Corner piece titled ‘The great divide’ (June 11). There was a time when the shift of focus had come to primary level education but as the writer rightly says not too much is being done today. And one major reason for unemployment (and eventually crime and frustration) is this lack of basic education. While it is equally important to prepare professionally and academically qualified individuals in terms of higher-level qualifications the bigger challenge lies in basic education.
