Vacation fee?

Letter September 16, 2019
The burden of vacation fees has crippled poor families to choose between a decent education and good life

KECH: I would like to draw the attention of the relevant authorities that though the schools are off for three months for summer vacation, students are charged fees for all months. I became flabbergasted when the administration of a Kech private school texted me to pay my younger brothers’ latest summer fee. If the students are not being taught for three months why should they pay the fees? Is this the way to do justice to poor citizens? Is it the responsibility of the poor to pay the salaries of teachers for summer vacation months? Surely not!

The privileged or middle classes manage to get their three-time meals and provide their children with quality education. But the burden of vacation fees has crippled the poor families to choose between a decent education and good life or food. I urge the government and other stakeholders to take stringent measures to curb this trend because education is the basic right of every citizen.
